StewMac Alnico 5 Single-coil Pickups -S-Style
Vintage vibe, great price. Wake up your guitar! Inspired by legendary pickups of the '50s, StewMac single-coil pickups bring out the best in your guitar.
The reviews say it all: "they really, really sing...great buy for the price." Wax-potted AWG42 coil windings and Alnico 5 staggered polepieces deliver vintage tone, optimum output at each position, balanced string response, and microphonic suppression. They're the real deal, for a lot less money.
Looking for extra punch? Our overwound model is specially wound to 7.6K ohms, for the bridge or neck position.
StewMac single-coil pickups have vintage dimensions for easy installation in standard bodies, and two vintage-style fabric-insulated hookup wires. Polepieces have 2-1/16" spread. Mounting screws, rubber tubing and wiring diagrams are included.
The middle-position pickup is reverse wound, reverse polarity, for hum cancellation at the #2 and #4 switch positions.
Note: Each pickup has a copper shield surrounding the coil, a modern feature for 60-cycle hum suppression not found on vintage pickups. To play "naked" vintage-style, simply snip the small jumper wire that connects the foil to the pickup's ground lug.

How to wire for great tone!
StewMac single-coil pickups are manufactured to replicate the tone and response of vintage single-coil pickups. However, unlike vintage pickups, the middle pickup is reverse-wound, with reverse-polarity. This gives you hum-cancelling output in the "2" and "4" positions of a 5-way pickup selector switch (when the middle pickup is combined with the neck or bridge pickup).
StewMac single-coil pickups are available in various output versions. Higher output pickups are typically used in the bridge position; this compensates for the difference in vibrating string energy that is "seen" by the bridge pickup compared to the middle or neck pickups. Higher output pickups can be installed in the neck and/or middle positions, but the output balance may be compromised.
Pickup height adjustment
The pickups should not be adjusted too close to the strings. For single-coils, leave about 1/8" gap between the top of the low E polepiece and the bottom of the string, when fretted at the highest (21st or 22nd) fret, and 3/32" for the high E polepiece. Adjusting the pickups any closer can cause "false" notes from wound strings at higher frets. Strat¨ guitars sometimes have this problemÑto cure it, simply lower the height of the neck and middle pickups on the bass side.
and are viewed from the back of the guitar's pickguard.
